Grand Prix and such

Hey people!! Welcome back...

Got some photos from the Grand Prix. I was just using my little point and shoot Canon and you're behind massive fencing so it was hard to capture good shots, but here they are nonetheless.

Went with Craig-o and his girlfriend Adelle, mate Ian from work, Steve (mate who's a mechanic) and Danny from Sydney. Good times!

I cannot communicate to people who haven't been to the grand prix how amazingly loud these cars are... You can hear them 10 Km's away from the track. When you're standing 5 metres away then you can imagine it's quite nasty for the ears.

I saw one of my mates (Chloe) from work on the TV at the GP today, she was one of the grid girls ;-)

In other news things are all good in Melbski's. New job is most excellent, weekends are getting a little insane though when you go out until 9am on a Saturday night (good ol' St Patty's Day).

Just booked flights to Perth for the end of May/start June. Dan Garvey and I are going on a 'romantic getaway' to escape the Melbourne winter - beach, babes and beer will be the order of things...

Josh has decided to stay another year in Japan. Marto and Domma are heading over in a fortnight to visit him in Tokushima. Should be some interesting stories coming out of that trip.

Anyhoo, hope all are well - there's plenty more to come... I'll try not to be so lazy.

For the last month three guys have been digging a big hole under the front of the house, and have now put in place the 'spiral cellar'. It has capacity for 1600 bottles, and the floor is over a foot above my head when I'm standing up straight in it. Gonna drop a safe in there too. When it's completely done there's going to be a trapdoor to get in. We've already got a couple of hundred bottles to put in there. If anyone's interested all up it cost 25 grand methinks, but should more than that in value to the house (you can't say the same about a swimming pool in Melbourne), so is a worthwhile investment (plus wine will be better in the long run) :-)

Sydney and Newcastle

After Queensland I flew down to Sydney to meet up with Benno. Went and cruised around my old stomping ground in North Sydney. I found out also that somehow I managed to pull the proverbial out of the hat and got first-class honours across the board for uni. Since then I've had two new very lucrative job offers which for at least the first year will go begging.

I got completely frikkin lost attempting to pick up Benno from work (damn Sydney roads), but after that headed straight to the Newcastle Bowlo to calls of, "Good area... Crackerjack."

Newcastle, despite being full of Novacastrians, has surprisingly good (but limited) nightlife, and is a good looking town (if you can ignore the industry).

The first night ate the weirdest hot dog ever. There was all kinds of international intolerance going on in my stomach. Imagine a hot dog with mushy pees, chilli con carne, mustard, tomato sauce, cheese, and who knows what else. Went to 'The Brewery' pub, which doesn't actually have its own brewery, and managed to somehow get a cab home (nearly impossible with 13 cabs for a city of 300,000. I think we gave the cabbie about triple the fare it was so damn welcome.

Right after the above photo, Benno passed out on the toilet post-cheese sandwich. Notice the heavily reliance on kitchen bench for verticular maintenance. Jane made me rescue him saying, "You fuckin get him out! He's your friend... I'm not a fuckin nurse, I'm an OT!" Fair point. After putting his pants on, Benno passed out again on the floor clutching the shower mat. Now why don't I think to take photos at these moments?

Second night went to a Newcastle keg party. Luke's roomie Jimmy was on fire with the darts. Such an underrated game for drinking... Damn Boonie has some bogan footy team mates. To thank the guy Dave for putting on a great keg party, they poured beer and pissed on his bed, and ripped all his clothes out of the wardrobe and chucked them everywhere... Class... Surprised they didn't let his tyres down too for good measure... Met some of the locals and managed to come in at 7am. Recovery at Penny's next day was rather painful.

Back in Sydney staying at Benno's again. From the next two photos you'll notice that Benny's view has changed somewhat...

Most of you will remember Petey and Dan from Melbourne or in Sydney. Danny kept yelling "Spring Break!" after finishing his CA exam and took me to the Bowlo in the city that doesn't have a Bowlo. Genuine 1999 prices.

It has a Chinese restaurant up the back where you order the meat first, then the sauce, then the rice/noodles you want. Petey got trashed one night and couldn't figure out this rather simple menu. He kept asking, "What's in the chicken one?" The Chinese dude just kept yelling out, "CHICKEN IS CHICKEN!!" over and over. Now every time Pete orders any sort of food he cops it. We won about $500 at the Cas (damn Star City is crap compared with Crown) with a bit of luck on Blackjack. Back in Melbourne it was straight to the 'dog of course... I almost missed you guys... Almost...

Friday night ended up at Cookie... again... On the way home Friday night Smolks was yelling out at the cabbie for cutting her off, "Do you want to.... FUCK!!!" I said, "Alright, if ya really want." You may have won this round... but the war isn't over... Hi fives for Biz Markie... Note to self though, upstairs of the Waterfront Hotel is mucho good.

Saturday ended up at Transport... again... Ended up at a gay bar at 2am to meet up with Noah and Co. I was singled out by Charisma for being the only single and straight bloke in the place. Bec was supposed to be my bum protection but she untied my shoelace, leaving me with no choice but to bend over... the wall sure came in handy. Jokes aside, it's actually a really good place and a lot of fun, but not really my taste with the drag queen DJ playing Aqua - Barbie Girl as the last song I remember, and it helps if you're gay.

I just spent the last two weeks away up in Noosa and Newcastle/Sydney. Getting bored of Melbourne, I just needed to "get the hell out of Dodge..." Because all you lazy full-time workers either couldn't get time off or are broke, I went solo. I stayed with Norm, one of Dad's old work-mates from the undercover days in Sydney. Norm is possibly the most Aussie* bloke on the planet.

After doing his washing, Norm hung out six perfectly faded blue singlets, three pairs of stubby shorts, a few pairs of jocks (he must turn them inside out), and no socks (because he never wears shoes). He also cuts his nails with wire-cutters. Norm is the same bloke that once told me whilst horse-riding, "Hey, wanna know a little trick?"

Me: "What's that Norm?"
Norm: "You know how to keep the flies out of your face?"
Me: "Nope?"
Norm: "Just put a bit of shit behind your ears..."
Me: "Nice."

When eating some crabs I bought, I asked Norm if he had any shell-crackers. He promptly went outside to the shed and came back with a foot-long pair of pliers covered in grease, "Here ya go." Good ol' Norm. Damn I love the stuff...
Norm let me use his truck for the week, which I used to go to the beach almost every day to swim, fish and run amongst the beautiful people. I realise now why people drive big 4WD's, because people just get the f*&% out of your way. Queensland pedestrians are like cattle though. They're a bit thick, and like to wander into the middle of the road.

Norm said that the primary use of the 4WD was for, "picking up chicks." Norm's orders were that it was fine to bring home girls "...as long as you bring her fat friend home for me."

On the case...

I went hiking through the Noosa National Park and got some great photos. It was only about a 7 Km walk. Some of it was even bitumen. I did find a little beach off the beaten path though that I got all to myself. Damn relaxing I must say.

I also stayed with my God parents for a couple of days which was kind of ironic. Not exactly religious myself, and neither are they. It involved getting blotto, and a free boat ride with Chris, the skipper on the Noosa River Cruises. Yay for free trips and food!

I went out Saturday night, the only time I've ever gone out to a pub solo. I figured being a loser that the backpacker pub was the place to make new friends, which I did. Turns out it was also schoolies at the time (cross my heart that this eventuation was not intentional) which thus made me a major toolie. Had a good night going nuts with a couple of Scotsmen. Their accents were gold. The funniest line I heard one of them say to a German girl was, "You'd butter be Caireful whun you're suck and takon punicullun 'cos you'll be pussed." Needless to say she had absolutely no idea what he said. Norm was sorely disapointed that I "didn't get a shot off" as he put it so eloquently, even though I came home at 4am. He was even more disgusted that getting laid was not my sole mission in life.

After a week I still managed to remain the whitest man in Australia (mostly...)

Stakes Day

With many just finishing exams, theses, and a week of partying at the races, Stakes day was the perfect setting to kick off our new-found freedom. With about 3 grand worth of food and drinks, marquees, tables, chairs, ice, etc jammed in the van, Matt and I rendezvoused at Flemington somewhat late, to phonecalls of "when are you getting here!?" and "Where are you guys". They had locked the gates, and it was looking like we might have to lug all the crap from the van outside to our carpark miles in. After some rather aggresive negotiation with security, they agreed (against all OH&S) to re-open the gates, and we got a security escort in... *phew*

We had a coupla marquees, buckets of grog which never seemed to get empty, and way too much food. Here's some photos of people:

Well done to those that managed to colour co-ordinate with the marquees and eskies as I suggested. We know who you are...

By the end of the day, any worries about the late start were quashed as most of the booze miraculously got polished off, everyone found new friends (and partners), and there were even some wardrobe malfunctions (no photos as promised).

Thesis - booya!

Well, thesis is over... Managed to get it in (just). Only 6 out of the 13 who I started with managed to finish honours... Not losing the 4 grand the uni gave me for a scholarship was incentive enough just to get it done.

Between 12am and 11am I wrote 6000 words, proofread the essay, corrected it and cut it down (still way over), printed out 4 copies (85 pages each) and binded them at home, knocked off a 15 minute presentation to the academics, drove to uni, dropped off thesis and sculled the world's biggest coffee.. Just catching up on sleep now.

If anyone has a penchant for the study of Information Security Incident Response Teams and Organisational Learning for large, high-reliability organisatons; and the application of nuclear power, petrochemical and other health and safety literature to the incident response for IT security, I'm happy to e-mail you a large slab of dribble.

I have my "last hurrah" boozefest on Thursday night at home, wake up, it's Friday the 13th... Dunno why everyone thinks this day is a bad thing, because after I woke up, had invites to coupla parties, sharemarket went up a percent, and I got a week's extension for honours! Hot damn if I don't like Friday the 13th. I also woke up with a splitting headache, but that was expected. Just trying to steer clear of black cats and ladders until the day is up.

Because of honours might have to give Derby Day a miss then and just go to Stakes Day instead...

Craigo's 21st

Well, had Craigo's 21st out in da country on the weekend. You wouldn't know it but it wasn't actually a fancy dress party. Seeing as it was being held at a golf club, I figured the only thing right to do was come dressed as old-school 1930's style golfers... OJ couldn't have agreed more. $30 down at the local Op-Shop and all was sorted.

The look on Craig's face when we turned up was priceless. Pity the photo doesn't include my incredibly tight old-man golf pants. Damn things were so tight that when we drove to the party had to do so with our flies undone because we couldn't sit down properly. Definately bit of the cut lunch happening. I didn't need to tell you that did I. Sorry, too much info. The golf-club staff were suitably impressed. When I got changed back into normal clothes, almost no-one recognised me. I was like Clark Kent in normal gear. 'Twas a fun night that ended in running down the bar-tab with shots of who-knows-what, and the night started up again at the 'Sporty', the local dive in Waragul.

I must've developed a penchant for tight pants during the party, because when I woke up I wasn't wearing my own pants, some other blokes. He was little. They had been tactfully placed next to mine and grabbed the wrong ones when I got cold at about 5am... well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it anyway.

Didn't ya Mum tell you not to put on everything you own at once?? Craigo makes use of a few birthday pressies from overseas...

Grand Final Weekend

Plans for Friday are to head to the Belgian (Bogan) Beer Garden on St Kilda Road. Apparently the old man is going to bring some girls over from work after their "happy hour". High-fives! Head into the city later on. If the weather's no good then I reckon give the beer garden a miss, otherwise should be great if there's a bit of sun around. I'll be there from 5:30 or so in the evening.

Yesterday suffered a headbutt to the noggin whilst playing indoor soccer. And I didn't even call someone a terrorist! Got a mild concussion 'cos I blacked out for a bit and was hazy for a while after. Really haven't been feeling quite right since... Didn't help that I was already hungover. Nearly spewed today. No good. We lost of course. Again. We'll win a game one day...

Who's your pick for the granny? Last year I was going for Sydney, but I really wanna see the weagles win this year... I'm tipping Judd for the Brownlow too. Guess a few people are heading out for the game and after and bbq's and such, think I might call it a night meself. Stupid thesis.

Hello Possums!!!

If I see one more farkin TV turns 50 program I'm gonna spew... The only thing I could watch over again is the infamous Countdown interview between Molly Meldrum and Prince Charles... OJ's birthday was a hoot, and ended in poor OJ being escorted out of the pub, leaving a few projectile 'presents', on the way out the door.

Got a taxi to Dom and Marto's housewarming thingy, in which the cabbie tried to double-charge me of course, I was a little vulnerable at the time after shots of Chartreuse and innumerable others. Ended up spending the rest of the night at various establishments with one of the house-warming guests who works as a 'dancer' at the Spearmint Rhino; she was sans-girlfriend. 'twas an eye-opening night. Still recovering from that one...

If anyone wants to go see a movie on Tuesday night, let us know. 'SNAKES ON A PLANE'!!!!! Nah, anyone actually seen a good movie lately??

Quiet Friday night drinks yet again ended in tears (not literally) thanks to helpful serving of no dinner, lots of drinks and the presence of Chris Sheridan (current team leader no doubt). Let's just say Shez and I were a little "disabled" by the end of the evening:

Saturday night was Bridie's birthday. She confessed that in year 10, I was on her top 5 list of blokes. I felt good (albeit somewhat embarassed) about that for a moment until I found out the rest of the five.

I was sexually assaulted 5 times in the late evening by various female patrons of the Gunn Island and Marquee nightclub (never again). Sticky, uneven floor, dark, dinghy, inadequate lighting, shit bar, and bus-loads of drunk hens. "Shit Judda..." you might say, "sounds like your kind of night!" But no. I'm not saying it wasn't fun, but man I felt dirty afterwards... Here's a couple of the girls in good stead.

E-chucka (otherwise known as Echuca on the Murray) is a good place. Just ask Timbo.

Thanks to Kate and the family, weekend before last, went up there with "The Big O" and co., on a house-boat or 2 having a jolly old time. If Boonie was gonna go on a holiday, I reckon he'd go somewhere like the E-chucka. Beer, mates, Murray Marlin, and a bit of the water.

Step 1. Drive to E-chucka and get a house-boat. If you drive to Echuca, stop by Kyneton, and the Bushland "Resort". It's quite a treat.
